The CBMTG would like to welcome the following incoming Board of Directors members!
Kristjan Paulson, MD, FRCPC
Dr. Paulson is a member of the Manitoba Blood and Marrow Transplant Program, based out of CancerCare Manitoba. A life long Manitoba resident, he completed his medical school, internal medicine and hematology training at the University of Manitoba. After a brief stop in Milwaukee for additional Blood and Marrow Transplant (BMT) training, he started on staff in Winnipeg in 2013. He is the service chief of the GD6 Transplant/Oncology unit at Health Sciences Centre, and is chair of the Leukemia Disease Site Group at CancerCare Manitoba. His main area of research interest is retrospective outcomes research in BMT, and is the Scientific Director of the Canadian Blood and Marrow Transplant Group (CBMTG) Registry.
Auro Viswabandya, MD
Dr. Auro Viswabandya has completed his specialty training in India and then did a 3 year fellowship in "Malignant Hematology and Stem Cell Transplantation" in Princess Margaret Cancer Center. He was a staff in the largest Hematology center in India for 10 years before moving to Princess Margaret Cancer Center as an active staff in Allogeneic Stem Cell Transplant Division. Dr. Auro Viswabandya is appointed as an Assistant Professor in the Division of Medical Oncology, Department of Medicine, University of Toronto. He is currently the Associate Director and Fellowship Supervisor in the Allogeneic Stem Cell Transplant Program at PMH.
He has published more than 100 peer reviewed journal articles and 5 book chapters to his credit. His areas of interest are GVHD prophylaxis in allogeneic stem cell transplant and Haploidentical stem cell transplantation.
He specifically looks at the combination of Anti-Thymocyte Globuline (ATG) and post-transplant Post Transplant Cyclophosphamide (PTCy) in patients undergoing allogeneic stem cell transplantation.
Currently, Dr. Viswabandya is the fellowship and residents (PGY5) supervisor of allotransplant at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. Education is his passion and he is currently the member of Education Committee of CBMTG and ASBMT. He is a member of Stem Cell Transplantation Advisory Committee of Cancer Care Ontario.
Charlene Downey, MN, NP(Adult), RN, CON (c)
Charlene Downey is a Nurse Practitioner in Hematology with Eastern Health at the Health Science Center in St. John’s, Newfoundland. Her clinical work currently focuses on malignant hematology, autologus and allogeneic stem cell transplants. Her career has seen her as a staff nurse on the Hematology/Oncology inpatient unit, clinical educator, and clinical instructor with Memorial University. Charlene completed her Bachelor of Nursing at Memorial in 1997, and her MN from Memorial in 2006 with a clinical focus, obtaining her Nurse Practitioner – Adult Acute Care credential. Charlene holds the position of a Professional Associate with Memorial University. Her areas of interested are in the treatment of Graft vs Host Disease, Cancer Survivorship, Lymphoma, and advancing nursing roles and knowledge in Hematology/Oncology. She is a member of CANO and CBMTG.
