Presentation at the BMT Tandem Meeting 2012

Presentation at ASH 2011

A number of years ago, the CBMTG collaborated with the BMT-CTN to complete a study comparing matched unrelated BM and matched unrelated PB transplants. Dr. Couban reports that this study will be presented at the Plenary Session at ASH this year in San Diego. The presentation will be titled “Increased Incidence of Chronic Graft-Versus-Host Disease (GVHD) and No Survival Advantage with Filgrastim-Mobilized Peripheral Blood Stem Cells (PBSC) Compared to Bone Marrow (BM) Transplants From Unrelated Donors: Results of Blood and Marrow Transplant Clinical Trials Network (BMT CTN) Protocol 0201, a Phase III, Prospective, Randomized Trial." Congratulations to all who collaborated with this initiative.

Otsuka/CBMTG Small Budget Research Grants Awarded

The Canadian Blood and Marrow Transplant Group is pleased to announce that the following members have been awarded the Otsuka/CBMTG Small Budget Research Grants:

  • Sarah Beattie, Doctoral Student at the University of Ottawa, School of Psychology for her research titled, “The Psychosocial Impact of Being a Caregiver and Care Recipient During a Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation”.
  • Dr. Janice Yeung, Clinical Pharmacy Specialist for her research titled, "Evaluation of a Voriconazole Dosing Adjustment Algorithm in the Management of Fungal Infections in Patients with Hematological Malignancies".
  • Dr. Elizabeth Krakow of Hopital Maisonneuve-Rosemont for her research titled “Does increasing immunosuppression prevent transplant associated lung disease triggered by viral respiratory infection”.
  • Dr. Shepphard, Blood and Marrow Transplant Fellow, University of Ottawa, for her research titled “The influence of genetic polymorphisms on the development of severe gastrointestinal complications during autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.

Otsuka/CBMTG New Investigator Grant Awarded

We are pleased to announce that Geoff Cuvelier MD FRCPC, University of Manitoba Department of Pediatrics Manitoba Blood and Marrow Transplant Program, has been awarded the New Investigator Grant for his research titled, “Evaluation of the aspirin triggered lipoxin 15-epi-Lxa4 on survival in a murine model of lethal acute graft versus host disease”. Congratulations!

Jennifer Wiernikowski Joins the CBMTG Executive

We are pleased to announce that as of September 26, 2011 Jennifer Wiernikowski will be joining the CBMTG Executive. Jennifer Wiernikowski, MN, NP--Adult, CON (C) is a Nurse Practitioner in Hematology at the Juravinski Cancer Hospital and Cancer Centre in Hamilton Ontario. Her clinical work focuses on hematological malignancies, autologous and allogeneic stem cell and bone marrow transplants. An active member of the Canadian Association of Nurses in Oncology since 1994, she ended her term as the President of the organization earlier in September. Her research interests have been in the area of breast cancer, cancer survivorship, advanced nursing roles in oncology and knowledge translation.

CIHR Funding Research Opportunity

In 2010, the III Institute Advisory Board identified solid organ and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) as a field in which strategic investment and targeted programming could improve clinical outcomes. CBMTG Member Article Accepted for Publication

We are pleased to inform you that work by members of the Canadian Blood and Marrow Transplant Group will be featured in an upcoming issue of Cytotherapy. The following article was accepted for publication: “Cryopreserved Mobilized Autologous Blood Progenitors Stored for More Than Two Years Successfully Support Blood Count Recovery after High Dose Chemotherapy”, authored by: Giovanna Cameron MLT, Adisak Tantiworawit MD, Mike Halpenny MLT, Brenda Letcher MLT, Sue Berrigan MLT, Karen Hindmarsh MLT, Angeline Giftakis BA, MLT, Johanne Fortier MT, Pamela O’Hoski ART, and Donna Hogge MD PhD.

This research received funding from the Otsuka/CBMTG small research grants. Congratulations to the team authored the article!
